Victorian Asia: Shiatzy Chen AW16/17 at Grand Palais, Paris

As we draw up to Le Grand Palais, Paris, there is already a palpable sense of excitement on the steps. Rumour has it that Eva Longoria is due to arrive, and as each Chinese superstar, model or actress steps out in the latest Shiatzy Chen outfits, the anticipation for what awaits us inside the historic venue mounts.

The runways is set with an enormous red spider web at the entrance and as the rows fill we can’t wait to see what Wang Chen Tsai-Hsia has in store for her Autumn/Winter 2016/17 collection.

Somewhere between sportswear and feminine detailing, the collection is resonant of Victorian stylings with Asian influences: think embroideries, beading, lace and corsets combined with pussy bows, frills and edgy petroleum. This juxtaposition between Victorian and Asian style continues throughout the colour scheme with blacks, inky blues and purples teamed with primary reds, powder pinks and canary yellows. Something that Shiatzy Chen presents especially well this season is a combination of materials: exquisite silks and organzas with sequins and tulle, jacquards and beading work together to create a visually thrilling collection. Mismatching is a theme, beyond the blending of textures; cocktail, athletic and cinched feminine shapes are what define this collection, finished with lace up booties and clutches.
